We took a taxi back to The Kimberly Hotel. This cab ride was awful! The driver was absolutely awful! He scared us to death! A lot of the streets were closed for some reason and that made traffic even worse. Thankfully we made it to our hotel. Our room was ready so we got to check in and make ourselves at home.
Brec had woke up that morning with some slight draining and pink in his eye. We decided after talking to the doctor's office at home to take him to an urgent care clinic. He was diagnosed with pink eye and we got drops along with an antibiotic in case he really had periorbital cellutis. Thankfully the urgent care clinic was very quick and we had no problems walking the five minutes from the hotel to the clinic (just mommy and Brec--I'm thanking God for my iPhone). Brec and I ended up meeting William and Ashton at McDonald's to eat (yuck but at least they had refills). After lunch we found a pharmacy to get the medicine and headed back to the hotel.
We decided to go see Downtown NYC and Battery Park. We took the subway to Battery Park and walked. We saw the globe that was in between the towers of the World Trade Center. We had to explain what it was to Brec. We had deliberately decided to not go to the memorial just because we didn't want Brec to be scared. Instead we got a million questions from him about it. Just like some people remember when JFK was shot, I remember when the Challenger exploded and 9/11 like they were yesterday. Brec didn't understand that his comments might upset some in NYC and even bother us so we had to take time to explain it to him several times.
From Battery Park we headed towards the Financial District. We saw the bull on Wall Street and The New York Stock Exchange.
We bought the boys $4 ice cream cones from a street truck and they sat on the steps of the Federal Building to eat them. This was before Ashton dropped his walking.
Right next to Brec and Ashton was a statue of George Washington. This location was where he took the first Presidential Oath.
I really hated how they had barriers that detracted from the view of national monuments. That seemed to be the norm in NYC though. Central Park was beautiful but they added tacky fencing that didn't go with the original. I know they need to protect the grounds but I think there is a better way to do it.
We then walked a short distance to the South Street Seaport. Along the way we had to stop because they were filming a movie with Ben Stiller. I guess that was our brush with fame.
The boys loved the sailing ships.
We then went to get a cab to take us to The Intrepid Air, Sea and Space Museum.
Again, this was not a great NYC taxi ride. I'm thinking it wasn't their day.
We got our tickets and then got a drink from the vending machine. The weather was hot outside and we were thirsty. After our drinks, we went inside. Brec loved the Lego model of the aircraft carrier.
This was the anchor chain.
Both boys thought that the guns were fun.
And, of course, Ashton had to take a picture with the bell.
And Brec had to pose with everything.
Brec was okay with those sleeping arrangements.
I was really amazed at the rude tourists who would try to bypass a line that had formed to have their picture taken. Surprisingly they were always adults. I was glad that the workers monitored and took care of the problem. We had it happen at least three times while on The Intrepid.
We went outside to watch the Disney Magic Sailaway Party. We had the perfect view of the Magic.
But her horn still didn't work. They used a fake one.
We were going to catch a cab to take us to dinner but we had a difficult time getting one. So we walked to Times Square. We thought we would eat at John's Pizzeria but after seeing the prices of soft drinks (and how thirsty we were) we opted to go someplace else. We ended up at Chevy's Tex Mex. The boys loved the computerized games at the table.
After dinner we headed back to our hotel and went to bed. We had a long day and we were tired.
